Sutco sets new standards in Ennshafen

Austria. After a project realisation of less than a year and only a few months of commissioning, Austria's largest sorting plant for lightweight packaging in Ennshafen was successfully accepted.

With a hall height of 25 metres, equivalent to six storeys, the facility is one of the highest in Europe and is an impressive example of modern architecture and engineering.

TriPlast GmbH, a consortium consisting of ARA (Altstoff Recycling Austria AG), Bernegger GmbH and Der Grüne Punkt Holding GmbH & Co., commissioned Sutco RecyclingTechnik GmbH with the realisation of this challenging project.

The plant impresses with its efficient use of space and optimised material flow. With an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes, it sorts plastic and metal packaging and thus covers 50% of the volume of lightweight packaging disposed of in Austria.

The sorting plant, on a site measuring around 14,000 m², sorts 24 different waste fractions, which are fed into the recycling cycle. Thanks to the excellent co-operation between the Sutco project management, experienced site managers and the installation team, the challenging construction phase for the building of the six-storey facility was successfully completed. The use of state-of-the-art technology – including 2.5 kilometres of conveyor technology, shredders, three screening drums, 38 NIRs, air separators, ballistic separators, Fe/nFe separators and fully automatic bale production – ensures that the fractions are sorted to a high degree of purity.

A key feature of the plant is its design as a hybrid installation, which can process two different material streams - from Austria and Germany - equally. The differences in residual material content and in film and paper are processed in this system in such a way that both different streams can achieve the same high degree of purity.

In addition, customer requests such as the separation of the film fraction into clear and coloured films and the sorting and recovery of hard plastics were implemented. Another special feature of the system is its construction on a 3 metre high steel grid structure, which facilitates and reduces the cleaning effort.

A project of this size was completed successfully and on schedule thanks to strong partnerships with renowned companies such as Tomra, Air Industry, Steinert, MTS, M&J, Spaleck, Schulz & Berger, unoTech and TIG Automation.

In view of the scarcity of resources in Europe, sustainable action is more important than ever. Together with TriPlast (ARA, Bernegger and Grüne Punkt), Sutco RecyclingTechnik has realised a plant that is considered a milestone in the circular economy.
